We always give ourselves a day or two in between big jobs to unwind, refresh, and most importantly take a moment to soak up our surrounds. It’s all too easy when you are working to take being overseas, in an amazing location, for granted. We have to remind ourselves to explore, immerse and enjoy.
We had planned a day trip driving from St Tropez to the 19th century Hotel du Cap Eden Roc – the 2017 fashion instagrammers resort du jour. It was popping up in our feeds daily, and looked like it was worth the long drive. So we took our gorgeous Sunday Somewhere model Ksenia along and planned to wine, dine and shoot an impromptu swim editorial at the hotel.
We took the back highway from St Tropez and stopped for a late breakfast in Cannes – the French Hollywood. And yes, we felt famous, for a moment. We stopped at the iconic 72 Croisette and pretended our 4 coffees and 3 baguettes didn’t just cost 56 Euros. We then walked across to the waterfront promenade to check out the beach clubs and well dress doggies, some better dressed than their owners.
After our quick tour of Cannes we travelled on to our destination – Hotel du Cap. The drive from Cannes to Antibes, where the Hotel is located was an unexpected pleasure. The ocean roads are peppered with small villages that reminded us of Brighton in Victoria, with colourful yachts and quaint French seaside homes – a complete contrast from the extravagant Cannes that we had left behind.
Once you arrive in Antibes, the scenery changes again. Grand manor homes on big blocks of land, facing the sea. And nestled amongst the S bends in the road are small coves filled with rickety jetties and brightly painted fishermen’s boats. We stopped to look around and decided that it was the perfect location to shoot our editorial. Not in all of our travel research had we ever come across an article or picture of this secret place. For us, it inspired true wanderlust.
As though the location needed to prove it’s authenticity to us, the local fisherman and their families had set up tables and chairs on the rocky beach and were chatting away and drinking wine together. It was such a pleasure to see.
After capturing some gorgeous shots with Ksenia we drove on to Hotel du Cap. We had come all of this way to debrief with a crisp Rose’ while looking out over the French Riviera and as we pulled up at the gates we saw the big, bold golden sign shouting FERME. It was closed for the season.
We took the coast road back to St Tropez, which was worth every extra minute in the car. It’s everything you see in the movies and more. If the weather is warm then wind the windows down, turn on the French radio and let your hair out. It really is magical. You are in the South of France.
Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc is open for the summer season from the 14th April to 19th October each year.
