Bright lights, big city, cocktails around the clock (hello, Manhattan!) and so much more. From the city-scape illuminating the horizon to the name itself, New York is the ultimate destination. It changes with the seasons, every hotel is a rooftop bar and the fast-paced lifestyle is the perfect opportunity for adventure, luxury or networking. So, what do you do in the city that has it all? This is Wallcandy’s non-vacation guide to NYC – an insider’s weekend away.
Fine Dining NYC Style
Arrive in New York in the late afternoon and catch an early dinner at the Avant Garden in East Village. Highly stylised, this modern vegan restaurant is perfect to start the evening, with decadent and beautifully presented plant-based fare. Treat yourself to the scorched cauliflower paired with one of their delicious wines.
A Not-So Standard Hotel
Book a room at the ever popular The Standard, close by to the engaging nightlife of the meatpacking district. The Standard is right on the Highline, and includes floor to ceiling windows with magnificent views, The Standard Grill restaurant, and even an app that allows guests to check in – with each other.
New York Pilates
Whether in the big apple for business or leisure, you’ll want to give yourself a break from the whirlwind of cosmopolitan life and break back into a Summer workout routine with a class at New York Pilates. Contact Wallcandy to book a private session, and start day two with a sweat session before heading to Blue Stone Lane for an Australian style coffee and the classic NY bagel.
Meet & Eat
For lunch, take in the iconic architecture of the Flat Iron Building with a pre-ordered meal from Dig Inn, who source their ingredients locally and feature a healthy and diverse menu.
In the evening head to the stylish Sonnyboy café and restaurant. They do simple but delicious beverages and modern re-inventions of traditional café food – a perfect meeting spot.
Make another early start and enjoy a run along the Highline for morning views of the dramatic Hudson river and New Yorkers making their daily commute. After clearing your head, head to Spacious to catch up on work. The group in charge of Spacious re-envisions urban spaces and empty restaurants to create weekday work spaces. Complete with high speed Wi-Fi and complimentary coffee, it’s perfect for creatives making the most of their time.
Before you leave town, make sure you chase down the elusive tacos at Los Tacos No. 1 in one of their locations at the back of Chelsea Market or Times Square.
Time to Shop
And of course, a fitting way to finish your time in the city is a last-minute shopping spree. For everything from unisex streetwear to international brands, check out Opening Ceremony on Howard St. Assembly provides quality boutique fashion and unique vintage pieces, and Popular Jewellery deserves its name with an Instagram cult following and enviable gold designs, be ready to haggle.
Tips and tricks for getting around in NYC
It’s best to catch the Metro or plan your travel prior to your trip. Travel outside of peak hour and adjust your expectations if you are hoping to travel fast around 4-5pm. When catching a taxi or Uber, make the trip easy for your driver by providing the closest cross streets when giving directions.
