Welcome, Our Digital Artist – Belinda Xia

First up, where are you while you are answering the Wallcandy Q&A?

In my home office, catching up on emails after an exciting week live illustrating

How did you get started with Belinda Xia Illustration?

I was working as a Graphic Designer in a corporate role, and started illustrating on the side as a fun, creative outlet. That started gaining traction, my work contract ended, and voila! Here we are.

What are your sources of inspiration and how do you go about creating your illustrations?

Other artists and creatives – when creatives pushes boundaries, you’ve got to work even harder to be noticed and that’s when magic happens!
Everything is drawn by hand using a combination of inks and watercolours, then cleaned up digitally.

How would you define success? Do you think you’ve found it yet?

Having a positive outlook, and solid, loving relationships. Mindfulness and exercise helps, and I have a wonderfully supportive husband and family who encourage me to pursue what I love. I’d never tempt fate by saying I’m successful, but I don’t feel like I’m failing!

Which brand would you most like to collaborate with and what have been some collaboration highlights so far?

I’d love to work with QANTAS… with the hope that I could travel for it ?

I have a soft spot for Aussie labels like Camilla & Marc, Aje and Zimmermann, and would be thrilled to work them.

Influencers have been really great to work with too, as they’re quite open with briefs and happy to have a bit of fun. This is when I started experimenting with animation.

Live illustration for QVB has been an absolute highlight, as well as all the large-scale projects I’ve done for Chatswood Chase.

And finally, 10 x speed questions

favourite travel destination?

Always New York! I’ve been 4 times and it never gets old.

Fashion must-haves?

The perfect white shirt, red lipstick and liquid eyeliner.

Favourite perfume?

At the moment, Balenciaga’s Florabotanica but it changes on a whim.

Favourite flowers?

White lilies

Do you collect anything?

Currently, earrings!

What are you reading at the moment?

I’m always between 3 or more books (I have attention issues obviously), but Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers is worth a read.

A movie that has inspired you?

It’s not a movie, but Iris Apfel’s documentary “Iris” puts everything into perspective – just be who you are!

Most played song this week?

I’m actually replaying Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die album. It’s perfect in the background while I draw.

Best downtime activity?

Walking the dog with my husband along the beach – bliss!

Something you want but will never have?

A talent for photography – I’ve tried so many times and just don’t have the eye!
